Hutto High School Automotive Basics Syllabus Instructor: Jeff Milam, Tony Martinez 512-759-4700 ext. 6100 Jeffrey.milam@huttoisd.net, Tony.martinez@huttoisd.net Course Description: Automotive Basics is an introduction to the Automotive Industry . It is the first class offered in a three year program at Hutto High school. It is designed to provide an overview of basic Automotive systems , career opportunities, training requirements, and maintenance and repair of those systems. Classes are a combination of classroom theory and some hands-on practice. Topics covered include basic shop safety and environmental issues, tool and equipment use, utilization of service information, component identification and operation, and basic maintenance of the automobile. Students are encouraged to participate in SKILLS USA automotive competition. Required materials: pen or pencil Classroom expectations: Students will be required to study system theory , answer chapter questions and participate in classroom discussions, as well as participate in all hands-on practice , in the shop. Students will also keep a spiral updated with warmup questions and notes. All campus rules also apply . Credits: one class length: one period Grading policy: Daily chapter work, quizzes, and spiral grades equal 30% of the total grade Classroom and shop Participation grades equal 40% of the total grade Written and hand-on Tests equal 30% of the total grade There will be 2 Daily grades per week, and 3 Tests grades per six-weeks Semester Tests grades equal 15 % of the total grade Late work policy: A max of 70% can be earned on a late assignment if it is received within three school days after the due date. Students are responsible for turning in all missed work. Recovery of failed assignments: Students will be given 3 school days from the time grades were posted, to recover a daily grade ( 69 or below). But, the student must have shown a good faith attempt on the first submission. A max grade of 70% is offered. Failed tests may be recovered for a 70, but the student must correct the original test and have completed all daily work prior to testing. Semester test cannot be retaken. Tardy statement: Students are not permitted to enter classrooms after the bell has rung without a tardy pass. A student who is tardy to class will be assigned to detention, according to policy.
